DAY 1 OF 5
“Find the account you forgot you had.”

Most people leave 5 minutes of digging between them and money that's just sitting there. Today's email shows you exactly where to look.

This isn't a small problem. The U.S. Department of Labor's own Retirement Savings Lost and Found database was created because so many workers lose track of old 401(k)s. Independent research from the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College has found that leaving a 401(k) behind at an old job, through fees, poor allocation, and years of lost growth, can cost an individual up to several hundred thousand dollars in retirement savings over a career.

Nationwide, an estimated 32 million-plus 401(k) accounts have been left behind by job-changers, worth more than $1.75 trillion in assets, according to the same industry research.

Old 401(k)s don't move on their own.

Every job change leaves a little more retirement money behind: in a plan you can't see, with fees you're not watching, invested however it was the day you left. It's not gone. It's just been waiting for you to deal with it.

Why I built this

I had several 401(k)s sitting at old jobs, parked in regular, limited-menu plans. I knew I should deal with them, but I kept putting it off. There was no urgency, so it never became a priority. Then one of those old plans got migrated into a bare-bones IRA with worse options, and that finally forced my hand. Once I actually sat down and did it, the whole thing took about 2 to 3 hours spread over 2 to 3 weeks, and it was easier than I expected. If it's been sitting there for years, it's probably not as complicated as it feels. It just needs an afternoon.

Some questions people ask

What is the 401(k) Rollover Challenge?
The 401(k) Rollover Challenge is a free 5-day email program from King Tides Ventures that helps people locate old 401(k) accounts from previous employers and understand their rollover options in plain English.
Is the challenge really free?
Yes. All five emails are free, always. The paid 16-Day Series is a separate, optional offer we mention only after the challenge ends.
Can I complete my rollover with just the 5 free emails?
Yes. The free challenge gives you everything you need to find your old 401(k) and move it. The paid 16-Day Series is for what comes after: ongoing coaching, encouragement, and nudges to help you follow through on what you decide to do with the money, not a requirement to finish the rollover.
Do I have to give you my account info?
No. We never ask for login credentials, account numbers, or any government identity numbers over email. The challenge teaches you how to find and move your own money directly with your provider.
